Welcome to the 15th New York Heavy Artillery website! The Fifteenth was part of the Union Army from late 1863 to mid 1865. The regiment, composed largely of Germans, was organized in New York City. Primarily recruited from New York City, Orange and Sullivan Counties, the ranks of the 15th Heavy Artillery were composed of a large number of veterans from 1861-63; principally from the German 7th NY Inf., 8th NY Inf., 20th NY Inf., 29th NY Inf., Schirmer's 2nd NY Independent Battery and Wiedrich's 1st NYLA, Battery I. Additional regiments represented include the 1st NY Inf., 3rd NY Inf., 4th NY Inf., 6th NY Inf., 13th NY Inf., 16th NY Inf., 18th NY Inf., 21st NY Inf., 25th NY Inf., 27th NY Inf., 28th NY Inf., 30th NY Inf., 31st NY Inf., 32nd NY Inf., 34th NY Inf., 35th NY Inf., 36th NY Inf., 37th NY Inf., 38th NY Inf., 39th NY Inf., 41st NY Inf., 44th NY Inf., 48th NY Inf., 52nd NY Inf., 56th NY Inf., 58th NY Inf., 63rd NY Inf., 68th NY Inf., 69th NY Inf., 88th NY Inf., 100th NY Inf., 102nd NY Inf., 103rd NY Inf., 119th NY Inf., 168th NY Inf., 176th NY Inf., 7th NY Cavalry, 1st and 15th NY Engineers, 3rd NYLA, 5th NY Heavy Artillery, 13th and 32nd NY Independent Batteries, 19th NY Militia, 1st and 2nd NY Mounted Rifles, 1st US Inf., 4th US Inf., 10th US Inf., 24th NJ Inf., 3rd MD Inf., and 81st PA Inf.
Initially part of Col. Kitching's Heavy Artillery Brigade, the Fifteenth New York Heavy Artillery was later assigned to Maj. General Warren's Fifth Corps, Army of the Potomac. The regiment would play an important role during the campaigns of 1864-65 in the East; including the engagements at the Wilderness, Spotslyvania Court House, Totopotomoy, the assault on Petersburg, Weldon Railroad, Poplar Spring Church, Siege of Petersburg, Boydton Plank Road, Hicksford Raid, Hatcher's Run, White Oak Road, Five Forks and the pursuit to Appomattox. The regiment returned to New York City in August, 1865 where it was mustered out at Hart's Island, with less than half of the original 2,100 soldiers remaining on it's rolls.
