Welcome to the 15th New York Heavy Artillery website! The Fifteenth was part of the Union Army
from September, 1863 to August, 1865. The regiment, composed largely of Germans, was
organized in New York City. Additional companies were recruited from Orange and Sullivan
Counties; Buffalo, Catskill, Troy and Philadelphia. The Fifteenth Heavy Artillery would distinguish
itself at the Battle of Globe Tavern on August 18, 1864, near Petersburg.
Initially part of Col. Kitching's Heavy Artillery Brigade, it was later assigned to Major General
Warren's Fifth Corps, Army of the Potomac. The regiment would play an important role in many
actions in the East; including the Wilderness, Spotslyvania Court House, Totopotomoy, the assault
on Petersburg, Weldon Railroad, Poplar Spring Church, Boydton Plank Road, Hicksford Raid,
Hatcher's Run, White Oak Road, Five Forks and the pursuit to Appomattox. The regiment returned
to New York City in August, 1865 where it was mustered out at Hart's Island, with less than half of
the original 2,100 soldiers remaining on it's rolls.
