Welcome to the 15th New York Heavy Artillery website! The Fifteenth was part of the Union Army from September, 1863 to August, 1865. Organized mainly in New York City the regiment, composed largely of Germans, would go on to distinguish itself at the Weldon Railroad fighting near Petersburg in August, 1864.

Initially part of Colonel Kitching's Heavy Artillery Brigade, it was later assigned to Major General Warren's Fifth Corps, Army of the Potomac. The regiment would play a important role in many actions in the East; including the Wilderness, Spotslyvania Court House, Totopotomoy, the assault on Petersburg, Weldon Railroad, Poplar Spring Church, Boydton Plank Road, Hicksford Raid, Siege of Petersburg, Hatcher's Run, White Oak Road, Five Forks and the Surrender at Appomattox. The regiment would return to New York City and was mustered out on August 26, 1865 at Hart's Island.
